As you have probably heard by now, the twentieth anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death is this year. It is a very sad time of reflective mourning for people the world over, celebrities and adoring fans alike. This is true, too, for the iconic musician, Elton John. On the twentieth anniversary, Elton John shared on Instagram a very lovely, endearing, and melancholy photo of himself with her as a tribute to Princess Diana.
The seventy year old singer captioned the picture sweetly, saying that the world lost an angel twenty years ago. And while sometimes, there can be photos of two celebrities together and they may look mildly bemused or even altogether uninterested in taking the photo, the one shared by John was quite the opposite, as both bear beaming smiles to be in one another’s presence.
The two were close friends. Famously, in 1997 Elton John issued a re-recording of his classic hit, “Candle in the Wind” as a tribute to Princess Diana. The only time he ever performed the song live was at her funeral. The two were also committed to combating AIDS, as John’s Instagram account for the Elton John AIDS Foundation shared a photo as a tribute to Diana, who always worked to fight the disease.
Princess Diana is obviously best known as a member of the Royal Family over in England and she became quite a sensation over in the United States, as well. Elton John is best known for hits like “Daniel,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Crocodile Rock,” and for composing the soundtrack and performing many of the original songs for Disney’s hit 1994 animated retelling of Hamlet, The Lion King, which starred Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, and Jeremy Irons.
